Press Release

October 29, 2018 – Ottawa, Ontario

Today, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna, met with the Premier of Yukon, Sandy Silver, in Ottawa.

The two discussed the important partnership between the governments of Canada and Yukon in fighting climate change and protecting the environment. They acknowledged that northerners are on the front lines of climate change and among the first to see and feel the effects of faster-rising temperatures in our country. They discussed Yukon’s $31 million notional allocation through the Low Carbon Economy Fund to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions.

Minister McKenna also commended Premier Silver for Yukon’s unique system for pricing pollution as a critical tool for fighting climate change. The two also addressed the ongoing need to work together and with Indigenous Peoples to adapt to the impacts of climate change being felt in the North and to protect our natural environment.

“Canada’s north is at the front lines of climate change. Yukon has stepped up and is showing real leadership. The Government of Canada will continue to support Yukon’s leadership to improve energy efficiency, reduce pollution, protect nature, and create good middle-class jobs.”
– Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change

“Yukon is proud to be moving forward in partnership with the Government of Canada to protect our environment, strengthen our climate action, and grow our economy.”
– Sandy Silver, Premier of Yukon
